Road deaths down by 5% globally; India’s share rise

The total number of people killed in road crashes globally in 2021 reduced by 5% compared to 2011. This reduction is significant considering the doubling of the global vehicle fleet and the expansion of road networks. However, India's record worsened, with an increase in fatalities from 1.34 lakh in 2010 to 1.54 lakh in 2021. Additionally, India's share in total road fatalities also increased from 11% to 13%. Efforts to improve road safety are working, but fall short of the target set by the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 to halve deaths by 2030.
